Введенный в США порядок, по которому гудвилл не должен амортизироваться в течение определенного периода времени; вместо этого он должен на уровне отчитывающейся организации ежегодно проходить тест на уменьшение стоимости (иногда в переводах неправильно называемое «ослаблением» стоимости). Однако тест на уменьшение стоимости может проводиться не раз в год, а чаще, и гудвилл отчетной единицы может быть протестирован в промежуточную дату, если произойдет какое-то событие, способное уменьшить справедливую стоимость отчетной единицы до уровня, более низкого, чем ее зафиксированная ранее стоимость. Примерами подобных событий могут быть: существенное неблагоприятное изменение правовых условий или делового климата: неблагоприятное действие или решение регулирующего органа; непредвиденная конкуренция; уход ключевых работников (на которых держится бизнес), и т.д.
